Shedding Winter’s Layers: A Fresh Approach to Spring Colour

Like many of us, I find myself drawn to those first signs of spring – watching the light change and spotting new buds in the garden. It’s a natural moment to think about refreshing our homes too, but without feeling pressure to completely transform every room.

Working with clients during this seasonal transition, we’ve found that small, thoughtful changes often make the biggest impact. Your home should still feel like your home – just with touches that capture that natural spring feeling we’re all craving after winter.

A Bit of Fresh Foliage

Start with what’s right outside your window. Bringing in budding branches, fresh citrus, or early blooms instantly lifts a room. These aren’t just decorative touches – they can inspire your whole colour approach. We recently helped a client pair their favourite quince branches with cushions in similar soft pinks, and the room came alive.

Layer with Playful Prints

When it comes to adding personality, prints can completely transform a space. Try mixing scales. Perhaps a larger botanical print alongside smaller, more delicate patterns. We love layering prints in similar tones but different scales – it adds interest without overwhelming the room. Start with something simple like patterned cushions or a throw, and build from there as your confidence grows.

Be Adventurous with Texture

Texture brings depth and interest to your spring refresh. Mix smooth linens with nubby wools, add a touch of velvet, or introduce natural materials like rattan and woven grasscloth. We recently transformed a client’s sitting room by simply adding textured grasscloth cushions and a light wool throw – the interplay of materials made the whole room feel more considered and complete.

When it comes to textiles, it’s time to lighten things up. Pack away those heavy wool cushions and bring out linens and lighter cottons. We love using well-made heritage fabrics that still have substance but feel right for warmer days. They’re an investment that works hard year after year.

Some changes can be surprisingly simple but transform how a room feels. Switching dark lampshades for fun patterned ones, adding botanical prints, or swapping heavy curtains for airier versions can make a huge difference. You don’t need bright, bold colours to feel ‘spring-like’ – we often find softer tones like sage, shell pink, or butter yellow create that fresh feeling without overwhelming your space.

If you’re feeling ready for a bigger change, paint is your friend. But start small if you prefer. Even painting the inside of a bookshelf can refresh your whole perspective on a space.

Remember, this isn’t about following strict seasonal rules. It’s about adapting and making changes that help your home feel in tune with the brighter, lighter days ahead, while still keeping all the comfort and character you love about it. Take your time, trust your instincts, and enjoy watching your space evolve with the season.
