Unlock the Secrets of Spacious Living

Are you ready to transform your living space into a haven of order and serenity? It’s no secret that efficient storage lies at the heart of a well-designed home—something we, as London and Bath-based design enthusiasts, understand all too well. Discover the art of keeping your treasured spaces uncluttered, spacious, and effortlessly chic. From storage solutions that seamlessly blend with your home’s aesthetics to ingenious tips for maximising the utility of even the smallest corners, we’ve put together a guide of these clever design solutions.

The Core of Home Design: Appreciating the Art of Stowing

First, it’s invaluable to take a moment to understand why great storage matters. In a bustling metropolis like London or in a listed property in the countryside, where space is an indulgent rarity or planning permissions are restrictive, creative storage isn’t just a design decision—it’s a crucial lifestyle adjustment. Efficient storage empowers you to maintain a clean and tidy space without sacrificing the personal touches that make your home a reflection of you. It’s about balancing form and function, aesthetics and practicality.

Maximising Every Nook and Cranny

Sometimes, the most expansive storage solutions come from thinking small. Here are a few tips to help you harness those hidden spaces and make them work for you.

Under-Stair Storage Solutions

Under the stairs is one of the most underutilised areas in a home, yet it has monumental potential. With drawers, cupboards, and even wine racks specially designed to fit these spaces, it’s an innovative way to declutter the rest of your home.

It is a great opportunity to transform wasted space into the perfect storage solutions. If the Stairs are located in the hallway of the home , converting the space into a cloak cabinet to store outerwear keeps everything neatly tucked away yet readily accessible. Different ideas to approach this include installing custom-built drawers, shelves, or cabinets.

In our Victorian Townhouse we reconfigured the layout of the property which was previously split up to accommodate student housing. The stairs run parallel to the new kitchen and we wanted to optimise the kitchen storage. So, we decided to integrate a fridge at the highest point and have pantry storage leading down from there. This storage is expertly concealed by tongue and groove panelling. Not even an antique brass handle gives away the hidden storage as it works on a push mechanism to keep a clean sleek appearance.

Creating a Cosy Reading Nook with Storage

A well-placed reading nook is an excellent opportunity to sneak in some extra storage. By integrating shelves and drawers, you have your favourite novels a reach away without compromising the comfort of the space.

Designing joinery to go up and over a sofa can also create a perfect cosy space and puts your beloved items on display. Our snug in Bath was designed with this feature creating a cosy library where I keep all of my books. This is a room that gets used the most by everyone in the family so it needed to be durable and practical. We love using this space in the evening for watching TV or relaxing with a good read. The high-level storage keeps everything out of the way and makes what would have been otherwise a regular wall, innovative and extremely useful.

Alcove Optimisation

Alcoves can be challenging, yet they offer a deep-set and often feature-rich store for displaying or hiding your possessions. Bespoke joinery can create solutions that are perfectly suited for these unique architectural alcoves, from mini-libraries to display shelving with built-in lighting.

Fold-Down Desks

In a world where remote working is the new norm, finding space for a home office can be tricky. Fold-down desks are a revelation; they provide a compact working area that merges seamlessly with your living room or bedroom, and they’re also a storage space when not in use.  A timeless bureau can not only function for space-saving purposes but can also be a beautiful addition to your room.

Multi-Purpose Miracles

Furniture and fixtures that serve dual or triple purposes are a modern-day design miracle. Think of ottomans with storage, or side tables that can double as stools—a testament to the growing need for versatile living solutions. In our townhouse, one of our multi-purpose tricks was to incorporate a washer and dryer in our ground floor WC. This washer and dryer is concealed by a wooden countertop paired with a lovely fabric skirt. This adds an extra layer of warmth and depth to the space, conceals our appliances, and also acts as a surface so we can fold our laundry or place items on top.

The quest for innovative storage solutions is much more than a functional pursuit; it’s a reflection of how we honour our living spaces. It turns out that by carefully devising storage solutions, we’re truly crafting a lifestyle of purpose and elegance, one London and Bath home at a time.

Your home is a canvas, and our bespoke joinery and storage solutions are the brushstrokes that will bring your vision to life.
